Frequently Asked Questions
For selecting a speedometer, what information should I have ready when contacting a distributor or sales rep?
- You need to know the MPH or KPH range that you want
- Do you want an electric or a mechanical speedometer
- The point of takeoff and it's characteristics (transmission tailshaft output). If the output is mechanical, use a Hall Effect sender. If the output works with a magnetic pickup - the number of lobes ("teeth") on the tailshaft must be determined (usually it is 16), so that the programmable speedometer can be properly programmed.
- Do you require lighting in the instrument
- Are you running on a 12V or 24V system
- Diameter of the opening the instrument will be mounted in
- What type of environment will the instrument be used in (eg: highway; high moisture; off-road; etc)
If you wish to match the style of existing instruments you should also have the following:
- If your current instruments are a Stewart Warner line, which line (Seaworthy, Heavy Duty Plus, etc) (see the Stewart Warner Products page for the product lines)
- Bezel color wanted (black, polished, etc)
- Dial face and graphics (black dial, white numbers, SAE symbols, etc)
- Pointer type and color (eg: red with black hub)
Installation instructions come with each speedometer.
